Crystal IS Selected for $1M DOE Award
Crystal IS, Inc. has been selected for a $1.026 million award from The National Energy Technology Laboratory on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy. The award will offset the bulk of a $1.3 million program to further development of the company’s low defect aluminum nitride substrates for high performance, energy efficient solid state lighting applications.
“This is yet another significant step in the growth and evolution of Crystal IS, a company that is truly a Tech Valley success story,” said U.S. Rep. Michael R. McNulty (D-Green Island). “Right here in Green Island, Crystal IS is pioneering solid state lighting technologies that can have an enormous positive impact on reducing the nation’s energy consumption.”
The award is round four of DOE’s SSL Core Technology Research and Product Development Funding Opportunity Announcements, in which the overarching goal is to develop advanced SSL technologies that, compared with conventional lighting technologies, are much more energy efficient, longer lasting and cost competitive.
In this program, Crystal IS will further develop its AlN substrates and explore advantages gained in efficiency and lifetime by working with leading industry partners to manufacture and test high current, high brightness white light emitting diodes (LEDs) on these substrates.
“Industry analysts estimate that solid state lighting is a $14 billion market, which clearly represents an enormous opportunity for our company,” said Leo Schowalter, chief technology officer of Crystal IS. “This DOE award is not only a validation of our current technology, but it’s also an opportunity to accelerate our substrate development efforts. This will allow us to maintain our global industry lead in supplying key components for ultraviolet LEDs while also facilitating our entry into the solid state lighting arena.”
Crystal IS is the world leader in the growth of low defect, single crystal AlN, from which it produces high performance AlN substrates for the semiconductor industry. These low defect substrates have already been demonstrated to offer significant performance advantages when used in the manufacture of ultraviolet LEDs and laser diodes. The company believes that these advantages can also be realized in blue, green and white LEDs operating at high current densities.
