Tech Industry Vital to New York Economy

The Cyberstates 2009 report, from TechAmerica which was formed by the merger of AeA and the Information Technology Association of America, shows that New York state remained the third largest cyberstate employing 304,200 with a total payroll of $25.9 billion. New York's high-tech industry experienced a net gain of 2,700 jobs in 2007, the most current year for which state data are available.

"The fact that New York's tech sector added 2,700 jobs in 2007, on the eve of the current downturn, demonstrates the strength of the industry," said Justin Wright, executive director, TechAmerica New York. "National data show that America's tech economy added jobs in the first three quarters of 2008, then shed them at only half the rate of the private sector in the fourth quarter. It is likely that tech will be one of the best positioned industries to weather this storm here in New York, particularly if we can tap into the federal stimulus package, which includes significant technology investments and could help accelerate recovery throughout the state."

Growth was seen in several sectors including computer systems design and related services (+6,700 jobs), engineering services (+1,800 jobs), and software publishers (+500). New York remains a hub for the photonics industry, ranking first in the nation with 8,400 jobs-more photonics workers than California with 6,200.
