GE Energy Adds 500 More Jobs in Tech Valley

GE Energy announced this week that it is adding 500 professional positions to work on its renewable energy initiatives and traditional power generation projects at its GE Power Systems division in Schenectady. The company plans to invest about $32 million, with the state chipping in $5 million, to renovate Building 53 on the GE campus. Most of the new hires will work out the 203,000-square-foot facility which will also house GE’s new wind turbine service center.

The new jobs – paying $70,000 a year or more – are expected to be filled within two years. Half of the new jobs will serve the business unit that makes gas turbines and generators used in traditional power plants, while the other half will serve GE's growing renewable energy business.

The announcement continues a recent string of significant investments by GE in Tech Valley. GE is opening a new wind turbine service center in Schenectady that will create 150 new jobs; invested $100 million on its Global Research Center in Niskayuna; and plans to build a $135 million digital x-ray manufacturing plant at the Rensselaer Technology Park in North Greenbush.

“GE is a company that can likely choose to locate its operation anywhere around the world," Dan Gundersen, co-chair of Empire State Development Corp., said. "But GE only goes with the best ... and that is Tech Valley.”

GE has a long relationship with Tech Valley dating back to the 1890s when Thomas Edison moved his Edison General Electric Co. headquarters to the region.

“GE came to Tech Valley to build a cutting edge technology of the 19th century," said State Senator Hugh Farley, “and has again chosen our community for highly visible 'ecomagination' projects, which will become the technology standards for future generations.”

GE officials say demand for power in the developing world is expected to nearly double over the next two decades.

“It's an exciting time in the power-generation business," said Steve Bolze, president of GE's power-generation unit. “Our vision here is to provide solutions to power the world responsibly.”
