Tech Valley Patents Remain Strong
Hoffman Warnick LLC, an intellectual property law firm based in Tech Valley, released its latest Tech Valley Patent Index which showed strong growth in patents issued to the region's inventors.
With regard to the fourth quarter, "we're up compared to the same time last year, and seem to be weathering the recession," stated Spencer Warnick, partner at Hoffman Warnick. Warnick added that "the annual reports also indicate that 2008 was a good year compared to previous years despite the recession."
In the fourth quarter of 2008, 612 patents were issued to Tech Valley inventors compared to 558 during the same period in 2007. For the year, 2,307 patents were issued in 2008 and 2,136 in 2007. This increase of 8 percent in Tech Valley outpaced the rest of the U.S. Nationally, patents issued increased 1.9 percent in 2008.
The "Patent of the Quarter" is chosen to illustrate firsthand the creativity of Tech Valley inventors. This quarter, the POQ is awarded to US Patent No. 7456636 issued to Oliver Patterson and Huilong Zhu for "Test Structure and Method of Defect Detection Using Voltage Contrast Inspection." The patent issued November 25, 2008. The patent is assigned to IBM, which is a client of Hoffman Warnick.
